School Lunch Funding
Our work began as a result of the urgent need to help the hungry girls at St Michael’s Primary School and trying to support the girls’ nutritional needs throughout the school day.
Supporting schools with kitchens, storerooms, equipment etc so that they are able to provide school lunches for their pupils will always be at the heart of all our work.
As of 2026 we have funded over 2 million bowls of maize-based porridge.
The benefits we have seen since starting the meal programme include:
Better concentration in class
Improved attendance
Better exam results
Staff are able to carry out their teaching more effectively
Your giving helps fund:
A child to receive school lunch every day
Fuel - firewood for the fuel efficient stoves
Cooks’ salaries
The Miracle Tree - Moringa Oleifera
To improve the nutritional intake of the school children sweet bananas are given to the whole school and locally grown Moringa powder is combined with their food.
Moringa is known as ‘The Miracle Tree’ in Sub Saharan Africa due to its nutritional properties.
Nutritional values v. Moringa
4 x Vitamin A in carrots
7 x Vitamin C in Oranges
4 x Calcium in Milk
3 x Potassium in a Banana
3 x Iron in Spinach
To ensure a regular supply of Moringa local farmers are paid to grow and supply Moringa to the schools.
The agriculture teacher, nurses and all staff ensure that the children understand the importance of a varied nutritious diet.
Update 2026 : We now have School Moringa Gardens at St Michael’s and Bishop Willigers - with the start of another Moringa Garden at Lubira Primary. We are passionate about Moringa - and over the coming years we hope that Moringa with all its many beneficial properties will have an real impact on the nutrition and health of the whole community.
