Transforming lives through Music
We are proud to support MATIC Brass band as part of our commitment to be a trusted partner in grassroot development and share here information about what they do
MATIC stands for Music Assessment Test and Integral Center. Founded in 2021 by Rev. Fr. Mathias Luyinda, a Catholic priest. MATIC Brass Band began with only ten instruments and a big dream—to uplift underprivileged children through music.
Today, MATIC Brass Band based in Namunyumya Parish, Bugweri District, is home to 115 talented children from disadvantaged backgrounds. With music as their foundation, they provide education, shelter, healthcare, and a safe, nurturing environment for youth to thrive.
Their Mission
To transform the lives of children from poor families by nurturing their musical talents, promoting education, and shaping them into responsible, empowered citizens.
What They Do
1. Music Education
They teach children to read and perform music across genres, from traditional hymns to pop. With over 100 members, they operate in three levels:
Beginners Class – 50+ learners
Intermediate Class – 30 players able to perform hymns
Main Band – 35 advanced musicians playing classic, local, and international music
2. Supporting Education
Many of their members come from families who struggle to afford meals or school fees. MATIC helps with:
Scholastic materials (books, pens, graph books)
School fees and medical bills
A small parish hostel housing 24 vulnerable children (9 girls, 15 boys)
Daily needs like food, education, shelter, and healthcare
3. Building Responsible Youth
Through music and mentorship, they:
Encourage school attendance and reduce dropouts
Instill discipline and prevent drug abuse
Campaign against early pregnancy
Practice community gardening for food security
Their Hostel Students
They currently support 24 children in the hostel, including girls and boys in primary, secondary, and vocational school. Each term, they must raise UGX 1,710,000 (£350) for school fees alone.
“Even affording two meals a day is hard for many of these families—but through music, we give children hope and a future.”
Their Challenges
Transport Costs: Visiting other bands for learning and performing at events is costly. A minibus would reduce expenses and improve outreach.
Limited Instruments: They don’t have enough instruments for all.
They urgently need:
10 Tubas (Bb/Eb)
12 Tenor horns
15 Euphoniums
40 Cornets
15 Flugelhorns
20 Trombones
10 Bass Trombones
2 Drum Sets
4 Sousaphones
6 Saxophones
